Cavan Sullivan became the youngest scorer in United States men’s national team history as the Americans claimed a 3-0 win over Mexico in an international friendly on Sunday.
The 17 year old has Bangladeshi roots through his mother’s family. Sullivan set the record at the age of 17 years and five days. The Philadelphia Union forward found the net in the 62nd minute to give the United States a 2-0 lead.
The goal came from a mistake by Mexico goalkeeper Jose Rangel. Sullivan picked up a poor pass before sending a long range shot over the goalkeeper and into the net.
The teenager raced towards the corner to celebrate and was quickly surrounded by his teammates. US coach Mauricio Pochettino later shared a warm hug with Sullivan when he came off the pitch a few minutes after his goal.
Another teenager, Julian Hall, also scored as the United States completed a comfortable 3-0 victory. The friendly marked the 80th meeting between the two rivals.
However, Sullivan took the spotlight. The Bangladeshi origin youngster made the night memorable by putting his name in US football history.
