A Dhaka court on Monday imposed a travel ban on former independent MP from Habiganj-4 Syed Sayedul Haque Suman and his wife Shammi Akter amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to ACC Deputy Director Akhtarul Islam, the commission sought the travel restriction on grounds that Suman and his wife may attempt to flee the country to avoid accountability.

ACC Deputy Director AKM Mahbubur Rahman submitted the petition, stating that credible sources had indicated efforts were underway by the couple to leave Bangladesh, potentially disrupting the investigation.

“The risk of them transferring or disposing of movable and immovable assets is high if they manage to leave the country,” the ACC argued in court, adding that the travel ban was necessary to ensure the integrity of the investigation.

Suman, who rose to prominence as a social media personality as Barrister Suman, and later entered parliament in the 2024 general election, has been in legal trouble since his arrest on the night of October 21 last year from the Mirpur-6 area of Dhaka. He was remanded for several rounds of questioning and has since been in judicial custody.
