A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the seizure of 86 bank accounts belonging to former lawmaker from Sirajganj-1 constituency Tanvir Shakil Joy, his family, and associates, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court’s Vacation Bench Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun passed the order, allowing a plea of the ACC.

The accounts, with a total balance of Tk17.77 crore, are allegedly linked to misuse of power, corruption, and money laundering, the ACC said. According to the petition, Tanveer Shakil Joy and his associates conducted transactions through these accounts to acquire assets beyond their known sources of income.

Investigation records reveal that the accounts are held in the names of Tanvir Shakil Joy; his wife Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury; mother Laila Arjumand; brother Tamal Mansur; and Mir Mosharraf Hossain, personal secretary to former health minister Mohammed Nasim, with several accounts operated under various associated organisations.

The accounts reportedly contain transactions involving crores of Taka.

The ACC further stated that the accused were attempting to transfer or dispose of the funds, which could compromise the investigation. The court’s order to freeze the accounts aims to prevent any movement of funds until the probe is completed, safeguarding public assets and ensuring the inquiry is not hindered.
