Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Shafiqur Rahman, said, Jamaat conducts politics for the people, not for any individual or party. He added, Jamaat works based on religious foundation but never exploits it.
He made the remark after a meeting with representatives of the European Union at the Jamaat central office in Bashundhara, Dhaka on Monday.
Shafiqur said Jamaat would never exploit religion for political gain. He added the party bases its work strictly on faith.
He told reporters the EU delegation asked about the party’s readiness for the upcoming national election and whether Jamaat had any concerns if a general vote and a referendum took place on the same day. They also asked whether such a schedule could cause instability.
Shafiqur said that people in our country are not fully aware of referendum concept and how they would handle two polls together is still unclear. Because of that, the elections could face disorder. That is why we suggested holding the two polls separately. The government can still do this if it wishes.
The Ameer of Jamaat said that if the party comes to power, they will build an inclusive Bangladesh. He added they will not exclude any political party. He stressed that, in the country’s interest, Jamaat in power could restore stability, revive the economy, and ensure rule of law for at least the next five years.
He urged that officials avoid corruption or favouritism. He also demanded equality for everyone. He said anyone who supported these principles is welcome to join them.
When asked whether Khaleda Zia’s illness could spark a political crisis, he said, “Almighty decides everyone’s health, and the people of the country are offering prayers for her recovery.” He added, “At the same time, everyone must accept this, and the functioning of society should continue without disruption.”
He further said that the February election is very important. Any slight disruption could push the country into a deep crisis. The Jamaat Ameer urged everyone to unite for the country’s present and future interests.
