Dengue claimed two more lives in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of deaths from the Aedes mosquito–borne disease this year to 396, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
A dengue bulletin issued on Sunday by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room said 516 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country between 8am Saturday and 8am Sunday.
Of the new admissions, 49 were reported in Barishal division (outside the city), 96 in Chattogram division (outside the city) and 96 in Dhaka division (outside the city). Another 127 patients were admitted under Dhaka North City Corporation and 75 under Dhaka South City Corporation.
Six patients were admitted in Khulna division (outside the city), 28 in Mymensingh division (outside the city), 31 in Rajshahi division (outside the city), five in Rangpur division (outside the city) and three in Sylhet division (outside the city).
In the past 24 hours, 540 patients recovered and were discharged. So far this year, 95,744 dengue patients have left hospital care.
The DGHS reported that 97,829 people have been infected with dengue this year, 62.4% of whom are male and 37.6% female.
November recorded the highest dengue fatalities this year with 104 deaths, followed by 80 in October and 76 in September. A further 39 deaths occurred in August, 41 in July, 19 in June, three in May, seven in April, three in February and 10 in January. No dengue deaths were recorded in March.
Hospital admissions have also remained high throughout the year: 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, and 10,496 in August. Admissions surged further with 15,866 in September, 22,520 in October and 24,535 in November.
The DGHS noted that it has been keeping national records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. Between January and December 2024, the country recorded 101,214 dengue cases and 575 deaths. In 2023, dengue caused 1,705 deaths, with 321,179 hospitalisations.
