Dhaka has ranked second among 127 cities worldwide for very unhealthy air quality, just behind New Delhi, with seven areas of the city showing particularly poor conditions.
This air pollution situation was highlighted by the Switzerland-based organisation IQAir on Monday morning. The organisation regularly reports on the state of air pollution. This live index on air quality informs and alerts people about how clean or polluted the air of a specific city is.
Dhaka’s air quality index was 225. Delhi’s air quality index was 405. An air quality index above 200 is considered very unhealthy. If it exceeds 300, it is deemed hazardous.
The seven areas in Dhaka city with very unhealthy air Monday are Eastern Housing (257), Dakkhin Pallabi (252), Bay’s Edgewater (248), Becharam Dewri (239), Kallayanpur (225), Grace International School (216), and Goran (211).
For over a week, Dhaka has been consistently ranking near the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities. The air quality in Dhaka is being observed as very unhealthy almost every day.
IQAir’s air pollution alert has mentioned several precautions for the city residents. One of them is that everyone must wear a mask when going outside. Outdoor exercise should be minimised as much as possible. Windows at home should be kept closed.
