Paul Pogba is set to play his first match for AS Monaco after the club named him in the squad for the first time this season. Monaco face Rennes in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
Pogba joined Monaco on a free transfer in June. The midfielder has not played a competitive game since September 2023. He received a four-year ban in February 2024 after testing positive for a banned substance that increases testosterone. The Court of Arbitration for Sport later reduced the ban to 18 months.
Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli said the club is helping Pogba regain his full strength. He said Pogba still has his vision and technique. He also said the player fits the team’s plan in midfield.
Pocognoli added that Pogba brings experience and leadership. He said Pogba must now adjust to the speed of top-level football. Pogba almost returned last month but picked up an ankle injury.
Pogba last played in Juventus’ 2-0 win at Empoli in Serie A in September 2023.
