Excavators brought to demolish Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at Dhanmondi 32 have been removed, though army, police, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel remain deployed to secure the property.
On Tuesday morning, the scene at Dhanmondi 32 showed barricades set up on the road, with security forces stationed in front of the house and several army vehicles visible.
The heightened security follows Monday’s tense events, when students from Dhaka College attempted to bring two excavators to Dhanmondi 32, intending to convert the previously demolished site into a playground amid the verdict in the crimes-against-humanity case related to the July mass uprising.
Police barricades confined the students to the area outside the entry point, stating that such actions were not permitted under the law.
Tensions escalated as protesters threw bricks and stones at officers, prompting baton charges and the deployment of two sound grenades to disperse the crowd. One police officer sustained a head injury from a thrown brick and received treatment.
Army personnel joined police to maintain order, and water cannons were also deployed. By 2:25 pm, vehicular movement was suspended near Russell Square and Mirpur Road.
Protesters left the area after 10 pm.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Dhanmondi) Officer-in-Charge Kashainyu Marma confirmed that the excavators were removed overnight and that security personnel remain on site.
Earlier, more than half of the house had been demolished in February 2024 following a speech by Sheikh Hasina, and on 5 August 2024, the property was set on fire.
