La Liga leaders Real Madrid were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw away at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, allowing champions Barcelona the chance to close the gap at the top of the table.
Xabi Alonso’s side extended their lead to five points over Villarreal in second and six ahead of Barcelona, who visit Celta Vigo later on.
Rayo stand firm in feisty derby
Rayo, sitting mid-table, produced a spirited display in front of their home crowd at Vallecas. Although Madrid created the better chances, Inigo Pérez’s men matched them for effort and had opportunities of their own to snatch the win.
Andrei Ratiu forced an early save from Thibaut Courtois before Madrid began to take control of possession. At the other end, goalkeeper Augusto Batalla made a sharp stop to deny Vinícius Júnior, while Raúl Asencio headed wide from a promising position.
The hosts did well to limit La Liga’s top scorer Kylian Mbappé, who struggled to find space, while Jude Bellingham was kept quiet despite several threatening runs from midfield.
Madrid fail to respond after European setback
Having lost to Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday, Madrid were eager to respond, but Alonso’s men dropped points for only the second time this league season.
“I want to keep growing and improving with constructive self-criticism — this is Real Madrid, and we know what we want,” Alonso said after the match. “It’s only November, there’s a long way to go. We must stay demanding but also measured.”
Few clear chances after the break
Eder Militão replaced Dean Huijsen at half-time to contain Rayo’s wingers Isi Palazón and Jorge de Frutos. De Frutos nearly broke the deadlock early in the second half, turning Pacha Espino’s cross into the side-netting from a tight angle.
Bellingham then tested Batalla at his near post after a clever touch inside the box, while Mbappé dragged his first real effort wide on the hour mark.
Batalla later beat away a powerful strike from Federico Valverde, and Rayo almost stole the points late on when Álvaro García fired narrowly over.
Late drama but no breakthrough
Trent Alexander-Arnold came on in the final minutes as he continues to build match fitness, while substitute Arda Güler’s deflected effort in stoppage time was Madrid’s last chance of finding a winner.
Rayo held firm to secure a deserved point.
“I’m proud of the team’s effort,” said Rayo goalkeeper Batalla. “We had chances to win, and against Madrid you have to push harder to close the gap in quality. But they also played with great intensity.”
