Forest Department officials have seized 860 kilograms of snails during a raid in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira and later released them into the Chuna River under the Sundarbans Satkhira Range.
The consignment was found abandoned on Wednesday night at Hajir Mor in Munshiganj of the upazila. Acting on information that snails collected from rivers under the Satkhira Range were being stockpiled in the area for sale, a team from the Forest Department carried out the operation and recovered the bags of snails.
On Thursday morning, the seized snails were released into the Chuna River.
Md Fazlul Haque, Assistant Conservator of Forests of the Sundarbans Satkhira Range, said the department will continue similar drives to protect the biodiversity of the Sundarbans.
