Eight people sustained burns when a gas leak caused an explosion at a car garage on Humayun Road, Mohammadpur, on Monday afternoon.

Two of the victims remain hospitalised at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute for further treatment.
The incident occurred around 1pm at Mona’s Garage in the Geneva Camp area.

Those injured include the garage owner Md Mona, 40; Badal, 23; Tarek Rahman, 23; Irfan, 18; Azad, 55; Miraj, 36; Akash, 25; and Joni, 35.

Md Mona told reporters that a private car had been brought to the garage for repair, and work was underway on its engine and gas lines.

Several employees were working inside when the gas leak triggered a sudden explosion, injuring both staff and the owner.

The victims were immediately taken to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.

Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute, said up to 20 percent of the victims’ bodies were burned.

Irfan and Tarek were admitted for further treatment, while the remaining six were treated and discharged.

Md Mona confirmed that the explosion resulted from a gas leak in the private car. Authorities are investigating the incident.
