At least eight people injured in a clash between Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP supporters in Madhabpur village, Ganna Union of Jhenaidah on Friday.
The confrontation erupted during a doa mahfil (prayer session) organised by Jamaat’s women’s wing, which also included discussions on iftar distribution.
The injured individuals include Jamaat leader Tabibar Rahman, 44, BNP student wing leader Shipon Hossain, 25, Shimul, 24, BNP activists Mohammad Hossain Ali, 55, Taru Mia, 48, Shahidul Islam, 27, Abdur Rahman, 50, and youth wing leader Abu Kalam. They were all admitted to Jhenaidah 250-bed General Hospital for treatment.
According to Jamaat’s Union Ameer Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, the incident occurred around 11:30am when BNP leaders and activists attacked the doa mahfil, while it was in progress. Jamaat supporters, upon learning of the attack, arrived at the scene to inquire about the cause, but tensions quickly escalated into a violent clash.
Tabibar Rahman sustained serious injuries in the assault and is currently receiving medical care at the hospital.
Several other attendees, including women participants, received local treatment for minor injuries.
On the other hand, Mohammad Arif Hossain, the student affairs secretary of the BNP’s district unit, claimed that the altercation began after Jamaat leaders made derogatory remarks about the government and its leaders during the meeting.
This prompted a protest from local BNP activists, which escalated into the violent clash.
Jahadul Islam, a senior BNP leader in the area, confirmed that at least seven BNP workers were injured in the confrontation.
Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shamsul Arefin confirmed the clash between the two political parties and stated that police forces have been deployed in the area to maintain order.
However, the exact number of injured persons has not been verified, and authorities are awaiting further reports from the hospital.
