Police detained seven people on Monday evening for allegedly attempting to bring out a procession following the first funeral prayer (Janaza) of veteran Awami League leader and former commerce minister Tofail Ahmed in the capital.

The first namaz-e-janaza was held after Maghrib prayers at Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi.

Police said a group of supporters and activists allegedly tried to bring out a procession immediately after the funeral prayer.

SN Nazrul Islam, additional commissioner (Crime and Operations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said law enforcement personnel intervened on the spot and detained seven individuals.

He added that the detainees are being interrogated and that legal action will follow based on the findings of the investigation.

Authorities said the incident is under inquiry to determine whether others were involved.
