A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab provinces on Friday, with tremors felt in several major cities including Islamabad and Peshawar.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the quake occurred at 6:09pm (local time). The epicentre was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a depth of 101 kilometres.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the tremors.
Pakistan frequently experiences seismic activity due to its geographical location along the boundary of the Arabian Sea, Indian, and Eurasian tectonic plates.
That tremor, which also caused no reported loss of life or property, was preceded on the same day by a 3.8-magnitude tremor near Khuzdar.
The sources note that the deadliest earthquake in the country’s history occurred in 2005, which claimed approximately 74,000 lives.
