BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday night said this year’s Ekushey is being observed in a free environment after years of fascist rule, opening the door to building a just and discrimination-free democratic Bangladesh.
“Ekushey had long been confined under an authoritarian regime. This time it is free, and that makes our feelings different,” he said, adding that a newly elected BNP government has taken office under the leadership of Tarique Rahman following the election.
Fakhrul, who also serves as Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister, made the remarks at the Central Shaheed Minar before paying homage to the language martyrs on the occasion of Amar Ekushey, observed as International Mother Language Day and Martyrs’ Day.
He said the restoration of democracy has heightened public expectations from the new administration.
“People now look to us with great hope. We want to realise their aspirations by establishing genuine democracy and ensuring justice across society,” he said.
Highlighting the historical significance of Ekushey, Fakhrul noted that its fundamental spirit lies in building a state and society free from discrimination.
“We will advance with that spirit in the days ahead. Inspired by this renewed Ekushey, we are committed to working for the welfare of the people, promoting our mother language and culture, and strengthening the independence, sovereignty and democratic foundations of Bangladesh,” he added.
