Five people were killed in two separate road accidents in Moulvibazar and Cox’s Bazar, police said.
In Moulvibazar, three people died in a head-on collision between a covered van and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the Bairab Bazar area on the Sreemangal–Moulvibazar road around 1:30am.
Abu Khayer, additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle) in Moulvibazar, said the covered van was travelling from Sreemangal towards Moulvibazar when it collided with an oncoming auto-rickshaw. Two passengers were killed on the spot.
The auto-rickshaw driver, Ali Nur, was rescued in critical condition and taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said he hailed from Kalenga village on the outskirts of the town, while the two other victims were residents of the Dargah area.
In a separate incident in Cox’s Bazar district, a father and his 12-year-old son were killed after a speeding truck struck their motorcycle in the Nalbila area of Chakaria on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway on Friday night.
The deceased were identified as Nurul Hossain, 45, and his son Shamim Hossain, residents of Baraitali under Chakaria upazila.
Md Ariful Amir, officer-in-charge of Chiringa Highway Police Station, said the accident occurred after 8pm as the victims were travelling to Chiringa Bazar.
A truck hit their motorcycle from behind, leaving them critically injured. Locals rushed them to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex, where both died while undergoing treatment, hospital authorities confirmed.
Police have seized the truck involved in the accident, but the driver fled the scene.
