A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Sarand area of Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan province. According to the University of Tehran’s Seismological Centre, the seismic event was recorded at a depth of 12 kilometres.
The state news agency IRNA reported the details of the tremor, citing data from the seismological centre.
Iran is ranked among the most seismically active nations in the world due to its geographical position at the collision zone of the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The persistent shifting of these plates leads to frequent earthquakes across the country, with western and southwestern provinces, including Khuzestan, Kermanshah, and Hormozgan, being particularly susceptible to such activity.
