Four members of a family were killed and two others critically injured when a truck collided with a battery-run passenger van in Domar upazila of Nilphamari on Sunday afternoon.
The victims were on their way to attend a wedding ceremony when the accident occurred on the Jaldhaka-Domar regional road in Ekbot area around 3:30pm.
The deceased were identified as van driver Parimal Barman, 40, son of Oli Barman of Nadiapara village under Pangamotukpur union; his sister-in-law Protima Barman, 30; and Protima’s two children – Bipasha Barman, 8, and Yadav Barman, 4.
Protima’s twin daughter Namrata Barman, 4, and another passenger of the van, Shahidul Islam, 40, were injured in the accident.
They were first taken to Domar Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as their condition worsened.
According to police and local residents, the family was travelling to Moral-er Danga area under Boragari union to attend a wedding programme.
The accident occurred when a truck travelling from Jaldhaka towards Domar lost control and hit the battery-run van coming from the opposite direction.
The force of the collision left the van severely damaged, while the truck fell into a roadside ditch.
Following the incident, firefighters from Domar, police and local people launched a rescue operation.
The victims were taken to Domar Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared four of them dead.
The injured were given initial treatment before being referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Domar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibullah Habib confirmed the deaths, saying three of the victims were from the same family.
Traffic movement on the road remained halted for around two hours following the accident.
It resumed after police and fire service personnel removed the vehicles involved in the crash.The OC said police were investigating the cause of the accident.
The truck has been seized and legal action is underway.
The deaths have triggered mourning in Nadiapara village and surrounding areas, where relatives and neighbours gathered in grief following the tragedy.
