At least four people were killed and four others injured in a tragic road accident on the Jamalpur-Tangail Highway in the Digpait EPZ area of Jamalpur on Monday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Rashed Mia, Chan Mia and Arifa Khatun. All were the passengers of the auto-rickshaw.
According to police, a Tangail-bound covered van rammed a battery-run autorickshaw, leaving Rashed dead on the spot. Two others Chan Mia and Arifa succumbed to their injuries after being taken to Jamalpur General Hospital.
Police said five other passengers, including a child, were critically injured and later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where another person was pronounced dead. The identity of the fourth victim could not be confirmed immediately.
Locals managed to seize the covered van after the accident, but the driver and his assistant fled the scene.
Nazmus Sakib, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Police Station, said that police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and have launched an operation to apprehend those responsible.
