Approximately 3,000 sanitation workers of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have received Eid gifts in the form of cheques from the Prime Minister on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Adha.
DNCC Administrator Md Shofiqul Islam Khan distributed the gift cheques among the workers at a programme organised today at Nagar Bhaban in Gulshan-2. Each sanitation worker was provided with a cheque for Tk5,000.
The event was presided over by the Chief Executive Officer of the DNCC, Muhammad Asaduzzaman.
Addressing the ceremony, Shofiqul Islam Khan stated, “Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman always thinks of the sanitation workers and evaluates their hardships and labour, which is why he consistently provides these Eid gifts”.
He further noted that the city generates a significant volume of additional waste during Eid-ul-Adha due to animal sacrifices. “Our sanitation workers work tirelessly to keep the city clean during this time. Considering their struggle, the Honourable PM has stood by them,” he added, according to press release.
Highlighting the importance of their role, Shofiqul told the workers, “You wake up very early to start your work, often without even having breakfast. You play the biggest role in keeping Dhaka city clean. If you do not work, the city will not remain beautiful or free from foul odours”.
He described the workers as the “soul” and “strength” of the city, reminding them that as stakeholders of the City Corporation, the primary responsibility for maintaining cleanliness rests on their shoulders.
The administrator also stressed that the efforts of the City Corporation alone are not sufficient to build a “Green Dhaka” and “Clean Dhaka”. He urged city dwellers to be more aware and to cooperate by not littering on the streets.
With the monsoon season approaching alongside Eid, the Administrator directed the workers to use necessary safety equipment. He stated that the City Corporation is prepared to conduct swift cleaning and waterlogging mitigation activities during the rains and urged workers to use the raincoats provided to them previously.
Earlier, delivering the welcome address, DNCC Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir remarked that the prime pinister’s gift would boost the morale of those tasked with cleaning the city during the upcoming Eid. He emphasised the need for everyone to remain alert so that residents do not face suffering due to sacrificial waste.
The event was also attended by the DNCC Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Syed Rokibul Hasan, and other senior officials of the corporation.
