At least 30 people were injured in a violent clash between activists of Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir at Dhaka College on Tuesday.
The incident, which involved attacks and a showdown, occurred at noon on 4 August. According to eyewitnesses, the Dhaka College unit of Chhatra Shibir had organised a discussion programme to mark the anniversary of the July mass uprising.
Before the meeting commenced, 20 to 25 JCD activists allegedly disrupted the room decorations and assaulted Shibir activists. The incident triggered widespread tension, leading to a series of chases and counter-chases between the two groups that continued into the evening.
Following the initial confrontation, over a hundred JCD activists took up positions at the college’s main gate and the NAEM alley while armed with sticks. Across the road, police personnel were stationed at the Meghna Filling Station.
Dhaka College Chhatra Shibir leaders alleged that at least 30 of their activists were injured.
They further alleged that JCD had mobilised over a hundred armed individuals from the BNP, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal from areas such as Old Dhaka and Kamrangirchar at New Market to launch further attacks.
Dhaka College JCD leaders claimed during a protest at the main gate that Shibir had carried out a planned attack with the intent to kill their members.
