A Dhaka court on Monday granted a seven-day remand for three suspects in a case filed over the murder of Azizur Rahman Musabbir, a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam issued the order following a petition by Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Aminul, who sought remand of the suspects for further investigation.
The suspects put on remand are Md Billal, Md Abdul Kadir, and Md Riaz. Another suspect, Jinnat, appeared in court and confessed to his role in the killing.
During the hearing, the three suspects on remand pleaded not guilty and did not have lawyers to represent them. Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruki presented arguments supporting the remand. The court subsequently sent Jinnat to jail while granting remand for further questioning of the other suspects.
DB Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said the suspects were arrested after analyzing CCTV footage and conducting raids across Dhaka, Manikganj, Gazipur, Mymensingh, and other areas.
Billal was identified as the main coordinator, Jinnat as the shooter, Riaz for reconnaissance at the crime scene, and Kadir for helping the suspects flee.
While initial investigations suggested a business dispute as a possible motive, authorities are also probing political factors and extortion-related conflicts in Karwan Bazar. “We are working to recover the weapon used and identify those who planned the attack,” the DB chief said.
Musabbir was shot on the night of January 7 around 8 pm near Star Kabab restaurant in Karwan Bazar. He was critically injured and later pronounced dead at a private hospital in Panthapath.
