Three active members of the notorious “boro Jahangir” robbers gang surrendered to the Bangladesh Coast Guard on Wednesday, handing over a cache of arms and ammunition and releasing a kidnapped fisherman.
The surrender took place at approximately 5pm in Kalamuli khal area, adjacent to Tambulbunia Forest Office in Shorankhola, Bagerhat. The individuals were identified as Alamin Hossain, 40, from Bagerhat, Toibur Rahman, 24, from Satkhira and Moniruzzaman Mamun, 20, from Khulna.
According to the media officer of coast guard Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, the robbers surrendered two local single-barrel guns, one local pipe gun, 40 rounds of live cartridges, and one walkie-talkie.
A fisherman held hostage by the gang was also rescued during the operation and is currently being processed for reunification with his family.
The gang members, who had long been involved in abducting fishermen and forest workers for ransom, reportedly chose to surrender after being “extensively cornered” by the coast guard’s intensified surveillance and intelligence-led activities.
The coast guard is currently conducting two special operations as “Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans” and “Operation Mangrove Shield,” aimed at eliminating banditry and ensuring safety of coastal communities.
Since 12 February 2026, these operations have resulted in recovery of 49 local and foreign firearms, 10 rounds of live ammunition, 316 rounds of live cartridges, 108 blank cartridges, and 194 air gun pellets.
During this period, 42 bandits have been apprehended, and a total of 41 hostages have been rescued alive and returned to their families. The coast guard said the “choto Suman” gang, consisting of seven members, had also surrendered previously.
Briefing the media, Commander Md Mansurun Mahdin and Executive Officer of BCGS Kamruzzaman, said legal proceedings and rehabilitation efforts for surrendered robbers are underway.
The coast guard reiterated the government’s “zero tolerance” policy against criminal activities in Sundarbans while urging remaining robbers to return to normal life through surrender.
Officials also added that those who choose to surrender will be provided rehabilitation opportunities, whereas those continuing criminal acts will face full rigour of the law.
