The government on Thursday promoted 179 deputy secretaries to the rank of joint secretary in the largest single round of promotions in the civil administration since the BNP-led government assumed office following the 13th parliamentary election.

The Ministry of Public Administration announced the promotions through two separate notifications issued on Thursday.

Under the first notification, 172 deputy secretaries were promoted to joint secretary. A second notification promoted seven more deputy secretaries currently serving at Bangladesh’s embassies, high commissions and other overseas missions.

Earlier in the day, the proposal for the promotions was sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. The promotions were approved following the prime minister’s consent.

The latest move marks the biggest single batch of promotions in the civil administration since the current government took office.

For the first time under the new administration, officers from the 25th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) administration cadre have also been promoted to the rank of joint secretary.

The list of promoted officials includes several serving deputy commissioners (DCs), reflecting the government’s broader administrative reshuffle.

According to the notification, the officials will have to submit their joining letters to the senior secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration either directly or through the designated email address.

The order also stated that if any official’s workplace has changed from the one mentioned in the promotion order, the officer must submit the joining report with details of the updated workplace.

The government has retained the authority to amend or cancel the promotion order if any adverse information or discrepancies are found against any official in the future, the order added.

The promotion came after the summary proposal was sent to the Prime Minister’s Office earlier in the day and received approval, officials said.

According to the Ministry of Public Administration, officials from the 24th and 25th batches of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Administration) cadre who were previously left out have been considered for promotion to joint secretary.

Officials said more than 190 officers from the 24th BCS batch had been recommended for promotion from deputy secretary to joint secretary. Their eligibility for further promotion to additional secretary will be reviewed in line with government rules.

Earlier, 80 officials from the 24th batch had received promotion, while 138 officials remained pending. This time, around 190 officials from different cadres, including the administration cadre, were considered.

From the 25th BCS batch, 80 out of nearly 170 officials were considered for promotion, while the remaining officers may be considered in later phases.

Many officials from the 25th batch who were previously promoted to deputy secretary are now serving in key government positions, including as deputy commissioners (DCs).

However, officials facing legal complications were not included in the latest promotion process, the ministry said.
