Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a rally in Dhaka on August 5 to demand the implementation of the “July Charter,” alongside a 36-day programme marking the second anniversary of the July mass uprising.
Mohammad Selim Uddin, a member of Jamaat’s central executive council and ameer of its Dhaka North unit, announced the programme on Monday at a press briefing at thew party’s Dhaka North office in Baridhara.
Speaking at the briefing, Selim Uddin said July represents “not just a month, but a historic chapter of resistance against domination and a symbol of safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty.”
He said the history and significance of July should be passed on to the younger generation.
He alleged that the government had failed to fulfil its commitments related to July after assuming office and claimed that, instead of implementing its pledge to reform the Constitution, it had created divisions in national unity.
Selim Uddin said Jamaat’s Dhaka North unit would actively work to ensure the successful implementation of the party’s centrally announced July programmes.
According to the schedule, the party will organise graffiti campaigns from 1 to 10 July, meetings with families of those killed from 11 to 16 July, discussions and photo exhibitions at sites linked to the deaths from 17 to 30 July, and a gathering of private university teachers and students on 24 July.
The programme also includes prayer gatherings at mosques on 31 July for those who died, followed by separate events involving Islamic scholars, workers and women from August 1 to 4.
The campaign will conclude with a rally in the capital on 5 August demanding implementation of the July Charter.
