The government has decided to grant a 25 per cent fare discount for students, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens aged over 65 on inter-city trains and the metro rail.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam announced the decision on Tuesday while speaking to journalists following a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat.

The minister stated that efforts are being made to launch the facility before the upcoming Eid. However, he noted that due to time constraints, implementation is more likely to be effective before Eid-ul-Adha.

To avail of the discount, students must present their institutional identity cards, senior citizens must show their National Identity (NID) cards, and persons with disabilities must provide identity cards issued by the relevant ministry.

When asked if freedom fighters would be included in this facility, the Minister clarified that no discussions have been held on the matter yet. He explained that the current decision was based specifically on age and physical condition, rather than being determined by category.
