The proctorial body of Chittagong University (CU) has conducted a raid in the Greenhouse area behind the Faculty of Biological Sciences and detained two persons with liquor and weapons used for hunting wild animals.
Based on a tip-off, a team led by CU Proctor Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy and Assistant Proctor Nurul Hamid carried out the operation at 12:20am on Tuesday.
One of the detainees is Suman Chakma, while the name of his female associate could not be known immediately.
Nurul Hamid said Suman Chakma had been living and farming for nearly 15 years on a plot of land leased from the university in Bakhtiar Fakir area. Residing in a small tin-shed house, he had been producing liquor there for a long time.
He added that frequent movements of outsiders and the regular presence of several students near the pond in the area raised suspicions among the university security officials.
After confirming the matter through surveillance, a team of seven to eight members of the proctorial team sealed off the house.
He also said, “During interrogation, Suman revealed that the woman was not his wife.”
There are allegations that Suman was not only involved in the liquor trade but also hunted wild boars, deer, wild fowl, and other wild animals from the university’s forests using local firearms and sold their meat.
Moreover, some university students regularly bought liquor from him. Several students who frequently visited the area have been listed as suspects.
A case has been filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act, for killing wildlife, and for involvement in anti-social activities, and he has been sent to a local court.
