A court in Dhaka on Sunday rejected the bail petitions of two former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) officers and granted fresh remand in connection with a case over an attack on the BNP central office in Nayapaltan and the killing of party worker Makbul Hossain.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah passed the order after hearing both prosecution and defence submissions, court sources said.
The court granted one-day remand for former DGFI director general Sheikh Mamun Khaled and two-day remand for former DGFI director Afzal Nasir.
The Detective Branch (DB) of police’s Motijheel Division had sought their fresh remand, stating that custodial interrogation was necessary for the progress of the investigation.
According to the case documents, on 7 December, 2022, the BNP central office in Nayapaltan was attacked, vandalised and looted.
During the incident, BNP worker Makbul Hossain sustained gunshot injuries and later died while undergoing treatment.
Both former intelligence officials have been named as accused in the case over alleged involvement in the incident.
Investigators informed the court that further remand was required to identify the alleged masterminds, financiers and other individuals linked to the attack, as well as to recover weapons and ammunition used in the incident.
During the hearing, the prosecution argued that remand was essential to uncover the broader conspiracy and identify other accused persons involved in the case.
The defence counsel, however, opposed the remand plea and sought bail, alleging that the accused were being subjected to repeated custodial interrogation as a form of harassment.
The court, after hearing both sides, rejected the bail petitions and observed that custodial interrogation was necessary for the sake of proper investigation.
The case was filed with Paltan Model Police Station and is currently being investigated by the DB Motijheel Division.
