Two people died in a fire that broke out Monday at the LA Plaza commercial building in the capital’s Mirpur‑2.
One of the victims was identified as Rakib Hasan, while the other, a woman, has yet to be identified, Mirpur Police Station Sub‑Inspector Ahsan Sohel confirmed.
He said, the two victims were rescued from the blaze and taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared them dead.
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, 23 people were rescued from various floors as firefighters battled the flames. The fire originated at a spa center on the building’s third floor, with initial reports suggesting an electrical malfunction as the cause.
The Fire Service said the call came in at 1:52pm. Four units initially responded, later reinforced by two more. The blaze was brought under control at 3:22pm and fully extinguished by 4:35pm.
LA Plaza is an 11‑storey commercial building. Panic forced many occupants to rush to the roof, while others were trapped on different floors before being rescued. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
