Drug dealers, terrorists and extortionists must be brought to justice regardless of their political affiliation, Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir said on Tuesday.
“There is no scope to consider political identity. A criminal’s only identity is that of a criminal,” he said.
The IGP made the remarks at the monthly crime review meeting for August 2026 at Police Headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday.
He also instructed field-level police officials to take appropriate legal action against juvenile offenders.
Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Md Sayedur Rahman chaired the meeting. Metropolitan police commissioners, range deputy inspectors general and district police superintendents joined the meeting virtually.
DIG (Crime Management) Mohammad Abu Sufian and other senior police officials were present at Police Headquarters.
Reiterating the police’s “zero tolerance” policy towards drugs, the IGP directed officers to take strict action to curb drug-related crimes.
He also stressed greater public participation through community policing to prevent drug abuse and trafficking.
With Durga Puja approaching, the IGP directed field-level officers to ensure adequate security so that the festival can be celebrated peacefully and without disruption.
He also ordered police to take steps to prevent rumours and misinformation.
Speaking at the meeting, Additional IGP Sayedur Rahman instructed police to collect information on juvenile gangs and investigate whether influential people were backing them.
He directed each police unit to prepare its own security plan for Durga Puja and remain alert to possible misinformation and propaganda on social media during the festival.
Police personnel were also instructed to properly use body-worn cameras while performing their duties.
Sayedur Rahman stressed the importance of using community policing effectively to maintain law and order and control crime. He also urged police personnel to maintain professionalism in carrying out their duties.
The meeting reviewed the overall crime situation in August, including major incidents reported during the month.
Officials discussed cases involving robbery, dacoity, murder, rape, attacks on police and abduction, along with pending arrest warrants, investigation and trial outcomes, and conviction rates.
