Two independent candidates for the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) elections have withdrawn their candidatures to extend their full support to Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)-backed panel.
They announced withdrawal of their candidacies at a press conference on the university campus on Tuesday.
Campus sources said vice-president (VP) candidate Sayed Md Redwan and office secretary candidate Sakhawat Hossain Salman stayed away from running the Cucsu election race.
Both the candidates began their election campaigns by paying tribute to Abrar Fahad, a BUET student, who was killed this day in 2019.
In a written statement, Redwan said, “The proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, taught us that the party is greater than the individual, and the country is greater than the party. Today, I deeply realidse the significance of that teaching.”
“I am withdrawing my candidacy and extending my full support to JCD-nominated VP candidate Sazzad Hossain Hridoy,” he added.
Salman also announced withdrawal of his candidature from the election race, expressing his support for JCD-nominated candidate Touhidul Islam.
Responding to journalists from queries, both the candidates said their decisions were made independently, not under any pressure. They said they initially sought nomination from the JCD-backed panel.
They further clarified that only the two of them have withdrawn candidacy from their independent panel, while other panel members will decide individually whether to run the race.
