A violent clash between activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in Chuadanga’s Jibannagar upazila early Sunday left one man dead and at least six others injured.
The deceased, Hafizur Rahman, 55, a jewellery shop owner and elder brother of Jamaat’s Banka Union ameer, succumbed to his injuries at Islami Bank Hospital in Dhaka around 2:30am, Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Solaiman Sheikh said.
Among the critically injured was Mofizur Rahman, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Banka Union ameer and Hafizur’s younger brother. He was shifted to the ICU of a private hospital in Dhaka, where his condition remained critical at the time of reporting.
Witnesses said the clashes erupted at Hasadah Bazar, near Kamil Madrasha gate, between 7pm and 9pm on Saturday, shortly after iftar, over a longstanding rivalry. About 40–45 minutes later, activists from Hasadah and neighbouring Banka unions regrouped, triggering fresh violence.
During the second confrontation, BNP activists allegedly attacked Mofizur Rahman, and when Hafizur intervened, he was assaulted and seriously injured. Both brothers were initially taken to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex, then referred to Jashore 250-bed General Hospital, and later airlifted to Dhaka.
Police rushed to the scene, brought the situation under control and rescued the injured. Additional forces were deployed to prevent further clashes.
Other injured Jamaat activists included Khairul Islam, 50, Sohel, 35, and Mofizur Rahman, 40. Two were admitted to Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex.
Three BNP members were also injured, Abdus Salam Master, 50, general secretary of BNP’s Banka Union unit, Mehedi Hasan, 40, a former leader of Hasadah Union Swechchhasebak Dal, and his father Jasmin Uddin, 65.
Later in the night, when BNP’s Banka Union general secretary went to Jibannagar police station to file a complaint, he was reportedly attacked in front of police personnel. Officers intervened and arranged his treatment at the upazila health complex.
The clashes highlight the fragile law-and-order situation in Jibannagar, with local authorities keeping a close watch to prevent further violence.
