Fifteen BNP activists were injured in an attack in Sunamganj’s Shantiganj upazila, allegedly carried out by Awami League leaders and activists, with five of the injured sustaining serious injuries.
A written complaint was submitted to Shantiganj Police Station on Tuesday, naming 33 people and accusing another 10 to 12 unidentified individuals.
Sujon Mia, nephew of Sunamganj district Awami League Vice-President and former public prosecutor Advocate Rais Uddin, has been named as the prime accused in the complaint.
The complaint was filed by Md Mahiduzzaman, who alleged that a group of people who worked for independent candidate Anwar Hossain during the last national election attacked the campaign workers of BNP leader Md Kayser Ahmed over a previous dispute.
He further alleged that many of those involved in the attack were active supporters of the Awami League, whose political activities have been banned.
According to Mahiduzzaman, the incident took place in front of his house in Shantiganj around 2:30pm on Monday.
He said the attackers used locally made weapons and that 15 people were injured, with some receiving treatment at local hospitals.
“We were attacked over a previous dispute. They also threatened to kill us during the attack,” he said.
When contacted, Shantiganj Police Station Sub-Inspector Rakibul Islam said a written complaint had been submitted but a case had not yet been registered.
“Police will take necessary legal steps after the case is filed,” he said.
