A mobile court on Tuesday sentenced 13 people to 15 days’ imprisonment each and fined two others Tk200,000 for illegally extracting soil from cropland and selling it to brick kilns in Rajbari.
Pangsha Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Saad Ahmed conducted the drive at Somespur in Jashai union. The operation was assisted by police and army personnel.
The convicted are Md Azad Kha, Md Badsha Mondol, Md Ariful Islam, Md Mona Sheikh, Md Amin Sheikh, Md Molin Sheikh, Md Shanto Sheikh, Md Shukur, Md Rokunuj, Md Rasel Khan, Md Sajib Pramanik, Md Sahag Mondol, and Md Al-Amin. All of them are drivers of soil-laden vehicles.
Those fined are Md Rakib Hossain and Md Aslam Pramanik, one a landowner and the other involved in brick kiln activities.
Executive Magistrate Saad Ahmed said the accused were sentenced under Section 15 of the Sand Quarry (Balumahal) and Soil Management Act, 2010.
