The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) has warned of a potential flood situation in 10 districts across the country, noting that several districts in the northern region may also be inundated.
According to a warning message issued by Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) flood information centre on Monday, the water levels of the Teesta, Dharla, Surma-Kushiyara, Sarigowain, Jadukata, Someswari, Bhugai, and Kangsha rivers are expected to flow above the danger level within the next 24 to 48 hours.
During this period, the districts of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Sherpur, Mymensingh, and Netrokona face a high risk of flooding. Additionally, there is a risk that low-lying areas in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajganj, Tangail, Naogaon, and Natore will be submerged.
Rainfall forecasts indicate that heavy to very heavy rain is expected over the next 24 hours in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions. Heavy rainfall is also predicted in the adjacent upstream Indian provinces of Assam, Meghalaya, and West Bengal.
Data from the flood information centre shows that in the last 24 hours, the water level of the Sangu river in the south-eastern Chattogram division has increased.
Conversely, the Halda river’s water level has decreased, while the Matamuhuri remains stable.
The water levels of these rivers are projected to rise over the next 24 hours and could increase rapidly during the subsequent two days.
