A student named Sakib Hossain, 22, died after drowning while entering a swimming pool in Konapara of Demra in the capital.
The incident occurred around 12:30pm on Sunday at the swimming pool of Shamchi Sports Gallery in Konapara. Friends and relatives rescued him in critical condition and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 2:00pm.
Friend Md Rifat Patowari said that 16 friends had rented Shamchi Sports Gallery in Konapara for Tk3,200 in the morning. They played football there and later went into the swimming pool. At one stage, Sakib went underwater while bathing. He was later rescued from the water by staff. He was first taken to a local hospital in Konapara and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Sakib’s father Md Arif Hossain said their home is in the Dhania area of Kadamtali. Sakib was an HSC candidate at Dhania College. He had left home in the morning without informing anyone. Later, the family learned from his friends that he had drowned while bathing in the Konapara swimming pool. Sakib did not know how to swim.
Dhaka Medical College Police Camp in-charge Inspector Md Faruk confirmed the death and said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue. The matter is being investigated by Demra Police Station.
