A 50‑year‑old man died after being attacked during Fajr prayers at a mosque in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Hafiz Mia, 50. Police have detained the accused, 30‑year‑old Joshim Mia, a resident of the same area.
According to witnesses and police, the incident occurred at Purba Loiarkul Furkania Jame Mosque in Cumillapara village under Bhunbir union.
Hafiz went to the mosque to perform his morning prayers as usual when Joshim suddenly attacked him, stabbing him multiple times with a pen.
Locals rescued the injured Hafiz and attempted to rush him to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Confirming the incident, Sreemangal Police Station Sub‑inspector Sajib Chowdhury said police conducted a drive and arrested the suspect immediately after being informed.
The motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained.
