Chief Adviser to the interim government Muhammad Yunus has arrived in New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
He landed in New York at 3pm local time on Monday (22 September). Earlier, on Sunday night (21 September) Bangladesh time, Yunus departed Dhaka for New York to join the UNGA, reports BSS.
Accompanying him are six advisers to the interim government, along with leaders of the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and NCP. The advance team, led by Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain, reached New York two days earlier.
Speaking to media at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN, Touhid said the interim government would present its activities and initiatives before the global community.
Yunus is scheduled to deliver his address to the General Assembly on 26 September, outlining the government’s priorities and agenda. He will also speak at a gathering of expatriate Bangladeshis on 27 September.
On the sidelines of the session, the chief adviser is expected to meet UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and several other heads of state and government. A meeting with US President Donald Trump has also been planned.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP acting chairman’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen and NCP’s First Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara are accompanying Yunus as part of the official delegation from Dhaka.
Jamaat leader Mohammad Nakibur Rahman joined the delegation from the United States.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. To commemorate the occasion, world leaders are gathering for high-level discussions under the theme – “Better Together: Eighty Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.”
