World Population Day is being celebrated in Bangladesh along with countries around the globe on Friday.
This year’s theme for World Population Day is “Empowering young people to form the families they desire in a just and hopeful world.”
On the occasion of this significant day, the chief adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus has issued a message.
Noting that adolescents and young people make up about 30 percent of Bangladesh’s total population, he stressed the urgent need for developing this segment into a skilled, educated and healthy generation to ensure a better future for the country.
“Socio-economic development of the country hinges on the education, health, quality of life and empowerment of this large group,” he said.
Prof Yunus also emphasised the importance of providing equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, as a cornerstone for building a prosperous Bangladesh.
Notably, the day was first proposed in 1989 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Governing Council, which aimed to focus attention on population issues and attract urgent attention.
World Population Day was first celebrated on July 11, 1990 in 90 countries worldwide.
