A 32-year-old man named Rifat Sardar was kidnapped by unidentified abductors from the capital’s Mirpur-10 roundabout area on Friday evening, shortly after arriving in the city for a new job.
The abductors have demanded a ransom of Tk10 lakh. Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Swapna Islam, lodged a complaint with Mirpur Police Station.
According to the complaint, the couple resides in Kanudaskathi village under Rajapur Police Station in Jhalakati district. Rifat had set off from Rajapur for Dhaka on Friday after receiving news of a job placement in the capital.
He was abducted around 6pm from the Mirpur-10 intersection area.
Immediately after the abduction, a phone call was placed to Swapna Islam’s mobile phone from an Indian mobile phone number, demanding a ransom of Tk 10 lakh. The kidnappers also called her from Rifat’s own mobile phone to demand the Tk 10 lakh ransom.
The complaint notes that the kidnappers sent Tk 50,000 to his bKash number. Meanwhile, Rifat’s wife Swapna Islam stated, “We have searched for him in all potential locations. Later, they demanded Tk10 lakh from me over the phone.
“I then borrowed Tk 50,000 from relatives and sent it via bKash.”
Mirpur Police confirmed that they are currently investigating the abduction of the youth.
