Even though ‘The Acolyte’ was cancelled after its first season, fans are still uncovering intriguing details about what might have been for the series. Showrunner Leslye Headland has revealed that the planned second season would have explored a more morally complex side of Yoda, offering a fascinating addition to the character’s long ‘Star Wars’ journey.
According to Headland, Yoda would have supported Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh in covering up a series of murders connected to the dark side. In the first season, the Jedi Order faces growing scrutiny from the Galactic Senate, and Vernestra makes a controversial decision to place the blame on the late Jedi Master Sol, painting him as a rogue.
With Sol gone, the Order gains a convenient scapegoat, allowing Vernestra to continue her secret investigation into The Stranger, implied to be her former apprentice.
Headland explained that Yoda’s support for Vernestra was intended to prioritise the survival and public image of the Jedi Order over complete honesty. While it may seem shocking to see Yoda involved in a cover-up, the showrunner notes that the character has made similar compromises in the prequel era, particularly during The Clone Wars.
During the Republic’s war against the Separatists, the Jedi Order shifted from peacekeepers to military generals commanding the clone armies. Yoda, as Grandmaster, played a pivotal role in these wartime decisions, which contributed to the Order’s eventual decline leading up to Revenge of the Sith.
By placing Yoda in a position where he actively supports a morally ambiguous decision, The Acolyte would have provided a rare glimpse of the Jedi Master weighing the greater good against full transparency. This storyline could have offered fans a deeper understanding of the Jedi Order’s flaws and hubris, bridging the gap between the High Republic era and the prequel films.
Although the series will not continue, the revelation about Yoda’s intended role offers a compelling new perspective on the beloved character, showing that even the wisest Jedi sometimes made difficult choices to protect the Order’s reputation.
