A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking the removal and arrest of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam after his name reportedly appeared in the investigation report on the Pilkhana mutiny.
The petition was submitted on Wednesday by Supreme Court lawyer Zulfiqure Ali Junu at the concerned branch of the High Court.
The Home Secretary, the Public Administration Secretary and IGP Baharul Alam have been made respondents in the writ.
Advocate Junu said the matter is expected to come up for hearing in the High Court next week.
Earlier on 6 December, Advocate SM Zulfiqure Ali Junu had been submitted letter to the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus seeking the removal of current IGP Baharul Alam after his name appeared in the report of the National Independent Investigation Commission on the 2009 BDR mutiny.
On 4 December, a legal notice was served on the government demanding the removal of Baharul Alam from the post of IGP.
Three Supreme Court lawyers Md Abdus Samad, Shahin Hossain, and Md Atiqur Rahman served the notice to the Chief Adviser’s Principal Secretary, the Home Secretary, the Public Administration Secretary, and the Law Secretary.
The notice instructed that IGP Baharul Alam be removed within 24 hours, warning that legal action would follow if the directive was not implemented.
The National Independent Investigation Commission’s report, which investigated the BDR killings, named five police officials, including the IGP, for failing to perform their duties.
The publication of Baharul Alam’s name in the sensitive report has triggered widespread discussion and criticism within administrative circles.
