A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Wednesday challenging the legality of the government’s decision to appoint administrators to six city corporations, including the two in the capital.
The petition was submitted by six Supreme Court lawyers -Md Golam Kibria, Zillur Rahman, Md Abu Daud Nizami, Md Al Muttaqi Billah, Md Ismail Hossain and Saifullah Khaled.
The respondents named in the petition include the Secretary of the Local Government Division, the Chief Election Commissioner and the chief executive officers of the six city corporations.
The petitioners sought a directive from the court to hold elections within 30 days and to allow deputy commissioners to run the city corporations in the interim period.
They also prayed for a rule asking the authorities to explain why the appointments of administrators should not be declared illegal.
On 22 February, the government appointed full-time administrators to six city corporations- Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka North City Corporation, Khulna City Corporation, Sylhet City Corporation, Narayanganj City Corporation and Gazipur City Corporation.
The High Court is expected to hear the matter in due course.
