Teachers hold a pivotal role in shaping society, not just by sharing knowledge but also by inspiring and guiding the next generation. World Teachers’ Day is annually observed on 5 October to mark their invaluable contributions.
World Teachers’ Day celebrates educators across the globe and recognises the essential role they play in shaping educational systems.
This year, the theme for World Teachers’ Day is “Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession,” emphasising the significance of teamwork in driving the transformation of education.
However, numerous teachers still face barriers in accessing professional development, limiting their opportunities to engage in collaborative learning that would enhance their teaching and sustain their motivation.
The occasion marks the anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation on the status of teachers, which sets international standards on teachers’ rights, responsibilities, recruitment, employment, and teaching conditions.
Similarly, the 1997 UNESCO recommendation for higher education teaching personnel extends these standards to university educators. World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.
The day serves not only to celebrate the role of teachers but also to reflect on the support they need to fully practice their profession. It offers an opportunity to reconsider the global direction of the teaching profession and the systems that support it.
UNESCO, in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International (EI), co-convenes World Teachers’ Day.
In a joint statement for the 2025 observance, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, and EI General Secretary David Edwards in a joint message said, “On this World Teachers’ Day, we call on governments, partners, and the international community to make a collective commitment to ensuring that collaboration is recognised as a norm within the teaching profession – because it is only through effective cooperation at all levels that we can build truly inclusive, equitable, and resilient education systems worldwide.”
