Born on October 8, 1946, Geeteara Safiya Choudhury stands among Bangladesh’s most influential business leaders. She is a pioneer who forged her own path at a time when women were rarely allowed a seat at the table. From founding one of the country’s most respected advertising agencies to breaking barriers in elite institutions and public service, her life is a testament to courage, conviction and self-belief.
The eldest of six children of AFM Safiullah and Jahanara Begum, Geeteara’s journey began with a strong academic foundation. She attended St Francis Xavier’s Convent, an English-medium missionary school, before completing her higher secondary education at Holy Cross College. She later graduated from Central Women’s College and completed both her graduation and post-graduation in English Literature from Dhaka University.
Her writing talent emerged remarkably early. While still in KG-2, her first essay was published on the children’s page of The Pakistan Observer. That early spark soon grew into a professional career in journalism. She wrote for newspapers in Dhaka, Karachi and Kolkata, and later joined The Pakistan Observer as an assistant editor, overseeing the children’s, women’s and entertainment sections. Her editorial journey continued in Karachi, where she became the senior editor of Shi Magazine. It was during this period that she discovered her calling in advertising.
In 1972, Geeteara began her advertising career as a copywriter at Interspan Advertising Agency. Her talent and leadership quickly propelled her upward, and she eventually rose to the position of Executive Vice President. Yet, it was her decision on July 4, 1974, that would define her legacy. On that day, she founded Adcomm Ltd., starting with just six employees and an unwavering belief in her vision.
The early years were far from easy. At one point, she was offered a prestigious position at UNICEF, complete with generous benefits and international exposure. She declined. Her conviction was clear: to serve her own country and to build something she could call her own. Through resilience, discipline and relentless effort, Adcomm grew into one of Bangladesh’s leading advertising agencies. In recognition of her contribution to the industry, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dhaka Ad Club in 2005.
Geeteara’s impact extends far beyond business. In 1978, she became the first female member of the Dhaka Club, later breaking yet another barrier by becoming its first female President. She also served as an adviser to the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed, marking her influence in national public service. Her numerous accolades include the Priyadarshini Medal (1999), Outstanding Woman in Business Award (2002) and Asia’s Top Outstanding Women Marketeer Award (2018), among many others.
Today, Geeteara Safiya Choudhury remains a powerful symbol of possibility, especially for women who dare to dream differently. Her life proves that when doors refuse to open, it is possible to build your own. With courage, perseverance and unwavering belief, she reminds us that sometimes the path does not exist until someone brave enough walks it first.
