Police have arrested three people, including the alleged mastermind, over the rape of a woman after her husband was tied up in Naria upazila of Shariatpur.
The couple were rescued after police received a call through the national emergency service number 999 following the incident at Aziz Dhali’s garden in Achura village at around 11pm on Monday.
According to preliminary information, an acquaintance, Hazrat Ali Khandaker, lured the woman’s husband, Rajib Ahmed Khan, to the garden. After he arrived, Hazrat, Rabbi, Emon Khandaker and three to four unidentified accomplices allegedly tied him up and demanded money for his release.
Under threat, Rajib called his wife and asked her to bring money. She later travelled to the scene by auto-rickshaw from Atipara. The suspects then allegedly assaulted Rajib before Hazrat and Rabbi raped the woman with the assistance of their accomplices.
After receiving the emergency call, 999 call-taker Constable Billal Hossain and police dispatcher SI Md Mizanur Rahman instructed Naria Police Station to take immediate action.
A police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mohiuddin Meraj of Naria Circle, Naria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moazzem Hossain and Bhojeshwar Police Outpost in-charge SI Zobaer Hossain rushed to the scene.
Police rescued the couple and sent them to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for medical treatment.
A subsequent raid led to the arrests of Hazrat, son of Abdul Hai Khandaker of Atipara village under Palong Police Station; Rabbi, son of late Alamgir Bepari of Achura village under Naria Police Station; and Emon, son of Malek Khandaker.
A case was filed with the police station over the incident.
The three accused were later sent to jail following a court order.
