The hanging body of a woman was recovered from a house in Rajshahi. Her husband was lying on the floor next to her, his wrists slit.
They were recovered from a house in the Court Station Hordogram Bazar area of the city on Friday night. Later, he was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College (RAMEC) Hospital.
The woman, Rowshan Ara, was 50 years old, while her husband, Golam Kibria Kamal (also known as Kamal Malik), a journalist, was 55. Journalist Kamal Malik is currently working as the Assistant Editor of the local daily Rajshahi Sangbad. He lives in a rented house in the Hordogram Bazar area of the city.
Kamal Malik is a retired official of the Postal Department.
Dr Billal Uddin from the emergency department of RAMEC Hospital informed that they found Rowshan Ara dead, with a cloth wrapped around her neck. The cause of death can be confirmed after an autopsy has been conducted, he said.
With regards to her husband, the doctor said Kamal Malik has injuries on his hand and leg and had consumed some kind of chemical substance. His condition remains critical and has been kept under observation.
Police said that Kamal Malik lives in a rented flat on the third floor of a three-story building. Upon a tip from a 999 caller, police arrived at the scene. They found the apartment locked, for which they broken open the door and brought out Rowshan Ara and Kamal Malik.
Later, they were quickly sent to the hospital with the help of the Fire Service.
Ahsan Habib, editor of the daily Rajshahi Sangbad, said, “We also went to the hospital after hearing the news. How the incident happened has not been confirmed yet. However, journalist Kamal Malik’s condition is critical. He has injuries in his hand and leg. Possibly his wrist has been slit. He has been taken to the ICU.”
Gaziur Rahman, spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and Additional Deputy Police Commissioner, told the media that an investigation is underway into how the incident happened. However, it is not possible to say anything for sure at this moment.
