For many people, travel is often imagined as something extravagant – five-star hotels, private pools and lavish breakfasts overlooking breathtaking views. While luxury travel certainly has its appeal, it is not the only way to experience the world. In fact, some of the most memorable journeys happen when travellers step away from polished resorts and embrace the simplicity of travelling on a budget.
Luxury travel offers comfort that is difficult to resist. From spacious hotel suites and attentive service to world-class amenities, it allows travellers to relax and indulge without worrying about the small inconveniences of the road. Waking up in a beautifully designed room, enjoying a carefully curated meal or unwinding in a resort spa can transform a holiday into a truly indulgent escape.
Budget travel, however, opens the door to a very different kind of adventure. Instead of expensive hotels, many travellers choose hostels or small guesthouses that are significantly more affordable. Hostels are designed for travellers who are willing to trade privacy for connection. Rooms, bathrooms and common spaces are shared with fellow adventurers from different corners of the world.
At first glance, the idea of sharing a room or adjusting the air conditioner based on a group decision may seem far from relaxing. Yet for many travellers, hostels become the place where unforgettable stories begin. Conversations in common rooms, spontaneous plans for the next day’s trip and late-night chats with strangers who quickly become friends are experiences that rarely happen inside a quiet hotel suite.
Alif Rahman, 28, has been travelling since his first year of university and continues to favour hostels even today. He said, “When I started travelling, I didn’t have much of a choice because I was travelling on a strict budget. Even though I can travel without constantly checking my balance now, I still prefer hostels.”
Travellers often leave not just with photographs but with friendships formed across cultures and continents. Alif mentions Zostel and Mad Monkey are two of his favourite hostel chains.
He added, “Hostels give you access to a community of nomads that no hotel can. If you stay at a hostel, I can guarantee you will leave with a bunch of friends from all over the world.”
Accommodation is only one part of the journey. Food is another essential aspect of travel, and it often reflects the true soul of a destination. While fine dining restaurants and curated hotel menus can offer exquisite meals, some of the most authentic flavours are discovered in small local eateries or roadside stalls.
A bowl of steaming Tom Yum soup on a quiet street in Bangkok or a plate of rich butter chicken in a crowded alleyway in Delhi can become the highlight of a trip. These small, unplanned food experiences often reveal more about a place than any luxury restaurant could.
Safa Islam, 25, a student at Macquarie University, believes that trying local eateries is one of the best ways to understand a destination. “Some of the best meals I’ve had while travelling were from tiny local restaurants that weren’t even on Google Maps,” she says. “You might not get fancy interiors, but you get authentic flavours and a glimpse into how people in that city actually eat.”
With that said, travellers should always be mindful of hygiene and their own tolerance when trying unfamiliar dishes; no one wants to spend their holiday recovering from food poisoning.
Even the journey itself offers choices. Some travellers prefer the comfort of direct flights and business-class seats, while others take connecting flights or longer routes to save money and explore different airports along the way. For budget travellers, the journey can become part of the adventure rather than simply a way to reach the destination.
Ultimately, both budget travel and luxury experiences have their own charm. Luxury offers relaxation, comfort and ease, while budget travel often provides spontaneity, cultural immersion and unexpected friendships.
For Bangladeshi travellers dreaming of exploring the world, the most important thing to remember is that travel does not have to wait for the perfect budget. Whether it is a modest hostel room or a beautiful resort suite, what truly matters is the experience itself, the stories you gather, the people you meet and the new perspectives you bring home.
