Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency’s BNP candidate Shahjahan Chowdhury has said voting for Jamaat-e-Islami would prevent one from attaining heaven.
Speaking at a roadshow in Baharchhara union of Teknaf, he said, “If you vote for Jamaat-e-Islami, I swear by Allah, you will not enter heaven. Allah Himself would not accept such a choice.”
Shahjahan, also president of Cox’s Bazar district unit of BNP, said that a video clip of his remarks has circulated on social media, sparking criticism.
He said that Jamaat’s politics has always gone in the opposite direction. He claimed, “Jamaat opposed the creation of Pakistan and also opposed the creation of Bangladesh.”
He also criticised Jamaat’s approach to welfare, saying, “Even if Jamaat gives money once through bKash, they will not follow up afterward. If the BNP comes to power, it will introduce a regular monthly allowance system for the general people.”
“Voters should consider which option is more beneficial for the public,” he urged.
He further criticised Jamaat for shifting loyalties, saying the party sometimes runs towards India, sometimes towards Pakistan. “We want you to live here, in your own country,” he added.
