Ishraque Hossain, the BNP-nominated candidate for the Dhaka-6 constituency, has described the election environment as satisfactory so far, with encouraging voter turnout.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday after casting his vote at Kamrunnesa Government Girls’ High School in Tikatuly, he said, “People in Old Dhaka tend to wake up late. I expect voter turnout to rise as the day progresses.”
Expressing confidence in his prospects, he added, “The people’s verdict is final. I will accept the result, whatever it may be.”
He also alleged attempts at irregularities by Jamaat supporters, claiming, “Since last night, some Jamaat members have been involved in misconduct and distributing money. They realise they are likely to lose and are trying to buy votes. I have heard that their Naib Amir in Sutrapur and the Thakurgaon Amir were caught with nearly a crore of taka.”
Raising questions about Jamaat’s sources of funding, he asked, “Did they rob banks to gather this money?” No immediate response was available from the party.
Dhaka-6 comprises wards 34, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 and 46 of Dhaka South City Corporation, with a total of 2.92 lakh registered voters. Of these, 1.53 lakh are male and 1.40 lakh female, and three voters identify as third gender.
In this constituency, Ishraque Hossain of BNP is contesting against Md Abdul Mannan of the Jamaat alliance.
Other candidates include Amir Uddin Ahmed of the Jatiya Party, Ahmed Ali Sheikh of Ganofront, Md Aktar Hossain of Bangladesh Muslim League, Md Yunus Ali Akand of Bangladesh Congress, and Md Fakhrul Islam of Gono Odhikar Parishad.
